Guna Milan Explained: What the 36 Points Really Mean

Guna Milan (also called Ashtakoot matching) is the traditional 36-point compatibility system used to assess marriage compatibility between two birth charts in Vedic astrology. Each of the eight "kootas" (categories) carries a different maximum point value, and they measure different dimensions of compatibility — not just a single overall "match percentage."

Varna (1 point) looks at spiritual compatibility and ego alignment. Vashya (2 points) considers mutual influence and control dynamics. Tara (3 points) relates to health and general wellbeing between the couple. Yoni (4 points) reflects physical and sexual compatibility. Graha Maitri (5 points) measures mental compatibility, arguably one of the more significant categories. Gana (6 points) looks at temperament — whether both charts share a compatible nature. Bhakoot (7 points) concerns overall prosperity and family life. Nadi (8 points) — the highest weighted category — relates to health and genetic compatibility, and a Nadi dosha (zero score here) is traditionally considered significant enough to warrant closer review regardless of the total score elsewhere.

A common misconception is treating the total out of 36 as a simple pass/fail threshold. In practice, 18+ points is generally considered acceptable, but the distribution matters more than the raw total — a high score with a serious Nadi or Bhakoot dosha is read very differently from an equivalent score spread evenly across categories.
