What Is Manglik Dosha?

Manglik Dosha — also called Mangal Dosha or Kuja Dosha — is a placement-based condition in Vedic astrology, not a separate planet or curse. It occurs when Mars (Mangal) sits in one of six specific houses counted from the Ascendant (Lagna), the Moon, or Venus: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house. Mars is a fiery, assertive planet, and these particular houses govern the self, family, home, partnership, shared resources, and intimacy — areas where Mars's intensity can, in classical interpretation, translate into friction, impatience, or conflict within a marriage if the rest of the chart doesn't support it.

It's worth being precise about what this does and doesn't mean. Manglik Dosha is a risk factor that a competent reading weighs against everything else in the chart — Mars's own strength and sign, aspects from benefic planets, the overall condition of the 7th house and its lord, and the Dasha periods a person is running. Which House Matters: Low, Medium and High Manglik

Traditional Remedies

Remedies for Manglik Dosha are chart-specific, but the most commonly cited traditional measures include:

• Hanuman worship — reciting the Hanuman Chalisa and visiting a Hanuman temple, especially on Tuesdays (Mars's day)
• Tuesday fasting — a simple, widely practised observance believed to pacify Mars
• Coral (Moonga) gemstone — recommended only after verifying that Mars is actually a suitable planet to strengthen for that specific chart, since wearing the wrong gemstone can do more harm than good
