Vastu Shastra: The Complete Room-by-Room Guide

वास्तु शास्त्र मार्गदर्शिका

A full walkthrough of your home — entrance, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and office — with the ideal direction for each and practical, non-structural fixes for homes that don't match it.

The Five Elements Behind Every Vastu Rule

Every room-specific Vastu recommendation traces back to the five elements (Panchabhuta) — Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space — and the eight directions, each associated with a presiding deity and elemental quality. The North-East (Ishaan) carries a Water/Space quality tied to clarity and calm; the South-East (Agni) is fire-dominant, tied to energy and transformation; the South-West (Nairutya) is Earth-heavy, tied to stability and weight. Once you understand which element governs which zone, most room-by-room rules become intuitive rather than arbitrary. This guide expands on our existing Vastu Shastra Guide with a practical, room-by-room walkthrough.

Main Entrance

Ideal direction: North, East, or North-East, which are believed to draw in positive energy and morning light. Practical guidance: keep the entrance well-lit, uncluttered, and free of obstruction directly opposite the door; a Swastik or Om symbol above the door and a clean, non-squeaky door hinge are commonly recommended. If your entrance faces South or South-West: this is not automatically inauspicious — it is common in dense urban plots — and can be balanced with specific pada-based remedies such as a bright light source at the entrance and keeping the immediate approach clear of heavy furniture.

Kitchen

Ideal direction: South-East (the Agni/fire corner), with the stove placed so the cook faces East while cooking. Practical guidance: keep the stove and sink separated (fire and water elements shouldn't sit adjacent or directly opposite each other), store drinking water in the North-East corner of the kitchen, and favour warm colours like orange, red or yellow accents. If your kitchen is elsewhere: a North-West kitchen is considered the next-best alternative; for kitchens in other directions, cook-facing-East positioning and colour corrections are the primary non-structural fix. Bedroom

Ideal direction: South-West for the master bedroom, associated with stability and grounded relationships; children's rooms are often placed West or North-West. Practical guidance: sleep with the head pointing South or East (never North, which is believed to disrupt sleep quality by opposing the body's natural magnetic alignment), avoid mirrors directly facing the bed, and keep the space under the bed clear of clutter. If your bedroom faces another direction: bed placement and head-direction while sleeping matter more day-to-day than the room's overall location, and can usually be adjusted with furniture rearrangement alone.

Bathroom

Ideal direction: North-West or West for the bathroom itself, kept distinctly separate from the North-East (which should stay light and uncluttered). Practical guidance: keep the toilet seat direction facing North or South (not East or West), ensure good ventilation, and keep the bathroom door closed when not in use. If your bathroom is in the North-East or South-West: these are considered the more challenging placements; remedies include keeping the space extremely clean and well-lit, using sea salt in a bowl to absorb negative energy, and minimising water stagnation.

Home Office / Study

Ideal direction: North or East for the workspace, with the desk positioned so you face North, East, or North-East while working — associated with better focus and opportunity flow. Practical guidance: avoid sitting with your back to the door, keep the workspace decluttered, and place a small plant or water element in the North-East corner of the room if space allows. If your office is South-facing: this is generally workable with correct desk orientation (facing North or East regardless of which way the room itself faces) as the primary fix.

When Non-Structural Remedies Aren't Enough

Most Vastu concerns in ready-built homes and apartments — where structural change isn't realistic — are addressed through furniture placement, colour, direction-of-use, and targeted remedies like yantras or specific object placement. A full property assessment, ideally with a floor plan, evaluates all zones together rather than one room at a time, since corrections in one area sometimes need to be balanced against another.

Common Questions

FAQs

Which direction is best for the main entrance in Vastu?+

The North, East, and North-East are traditionally considered the most favourable directions for a main entrance, since they are believed to invite positive energy and morning sunlight into the home. A South or South-West facing entrance is not automatically inauspicious, but Vastu recommends specific pada (zone) placement and remedies to balance it.

What if my kitchen is not in the South-East direction?+

The South-East (Agni corner) is the ideal Vastu placement for a kitchen since it aligns with the fire element, but a kitchen in another direction is very common in ready-built homes and apartments. Remedies such as positioning the stove so the cook faces East while cooking, and using specific colour and lighting adjustments, are typically recommended instead of relocating the kitchen.

Can Vastu defects be corrected without construction?+

Yes, in most cases. Non-structural Vastu remedies include repositioning furniture, adjusting mirror placement, using specific colours per zone, placing pyramids or Vastu yantras, and correcting the direction a person faces while working, sleeping, or cooking. Structural changes are usually reserved for severe defects that non-structural measures cannot sufficiently address.

Does Vastu apply to rented apartments too?+

Yes. While a tenant cannot make structural changes, most effective Vastu corrections — furniture placement, colour choices, mirror positioning, decluttering, and the direction faced during key activities — are entirely achievable within a rented apartment without landlord permission or construction.
