Kundli Matching: The Complete Guide

कुंडली मिलान

How Guna Milan, Manglik checking, and 7th-house analysis fit together into one marriage compatibility reading — and why the 36-point score alone rarely tells the full story.

What Kundli Matching Actually Checks

Kundli Matching (Kundli Milan) is the Vedic practice of comparing two birth charts before marriage to assess compatibility. In everyday conversation, "kundli matching" and "Guna Milan" often get used interchangeably — but a complete matching reading is actually three separate checks layered together, not one calculation:

  • Guna Milan (Ashtakoot Milan) — the familiar 36-point score, built from eight weighted categories comparing both partners' Moon sign and Nakshatra
  • Manglik (Mangal Dosha) status — whether Mars sits in a dosha-triggering house in either chart, checked and cross-referenced independently of the Guna score
  • 7th-house analysis — the strength and condition of the house of marriage and partnership, and its ruling planet, in each individual chart

A reading that only reports the 36-point number and skips the other two is giving you a third of the picture. This is the single biggest gap between free online "kundli matching" tools and an actual consultation.

Guna Milan: The Eight Kootas

Each koota measures a different dimension of compatibility, not a generic "match percentage":

  • Varna (1 pt) — spiritual temperament and ego alignment
  • Vashya (2 pts) — mutual influence and control dynamics between partners
  • Tara (3 pts) — general health and wellbeing compatibility
  • Yoni (4 pts) — physical and intimate compatibility
  • Graha Maitri (5 pts) — mental and intellectual compatibility, one of the more heavily weighted factors
  • Gana (6 pts) — temperament alignment (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa nature)
  • Bhakoot (7 pts) — family prosperity and long-term harmony
  • Nadi (8 pts) — health and genetic compatibility; the highest-weighted koota, and a zero score here (Nadi Dosha) is traditionally treated as significant regardless of the total elsewhere

18 or above out of 36 is the commonly cited threshold for an "acceptable" match, but distribution matters more than the raw total. A 26/36 score that includes a Nadi Dosha is read very differently from an evenly-spread 22/36 with no major dosha in any single category. Want to see how your own numbers work out? Why Manglik Status Is Checked Separately

Manglik Dosha depends on where Mars sits in each individual chart (1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house) — a completely different calculation from Guna Milan's Moon-and-Nakshatra comparison. A pair can score well on Guna Milan while carrying an unaddressed Manglik mismatch, or vice versa. Both need to be checked, and several classical rules — including Manglik-Manglik matching, where both partners carry comparable Mars intensity — can cancel or reduce the dosha entirely. The full detail, including cancellation rules and remedies, is covered in our dedicated Manglik Dosha guide.

The 7th House: Often Overlooked

Guna Milan and Manglik checking both compare the two charts against each other. What they don't do is evaluate whether each individual chart has a fundamentally strong or weak marriage house on its own. A well-placed 7th-house lord, free of affliction, is a positive independent indicator regardless of how the Guna score comes out — and a severely afflicted 7th house in either chart is worth flagging even alongside an otherwise strong match. This is the part of a reading that a calculator genuinely cannot automate, since it requires reading planetary aspects and Dasha timing together, not just comparing two data points.

A Practical Way to Read Your Results

  1. Start with the Guna Milan total, but look at the category breakdown, not just the number.
  2. Check Nadi and Bhakoot specifically — these carry the most weight and the most traditional significance if scored zero.
  3. Check Manglik status for both partners independently, and note whether a cancellation condition might apply.
  4. If either total or Manglik status raises a concern, have the 7th house of both charts reviewed before treating the result as final.

A free calculator is a genuinely useful first filter — ours uses Moon sign and Nakshatra to approximate the Guna score in seconds. What it can't replace is birth-time-corrected chart verification and the 7th-house and Manglik cross-check that a full consultation includes.

FAQs

What is a good Kundli matching score?+

18 or more out of 36 is generally considered an acceptable Guna Milan score, but the distribution across the eight kootas matters more than the raw total — a high score with a serious Nadi or Bhakoot dosha needs closer review, and a moderate score with no major dosha can be a stronger match than the number suggests.

Is Kundli matching only about the 36-point score?+

No. A complete Kundli matching reading also checks Manglik (Mangal Dosha) status for both partners, the strength of the 7th house and its lord in each chart, and any major doshas that a points-only comparison can miss.

Can a low Guna Milan score still mean a good marriage?+

Yes, in some cases. A lower total without a Nadi or Bhakoot dosha, combined with strong 7th-house indicators in both charts, can outweigh a higher score that hides a serious individual dosha. This is why a full reading looks past the single number.

Do I need exact birth time for Kundli matching?+

Yes, an accurate birth time is important. Moon sign and Nakshatra — the basis of Guna Milan — can shift within a single day, and Manglik status depends on precise house placements, both of which require a correct birth time to calculate reliably.
