A 7th house that is empty, afflicted by malefics, or whose lord is weakly placed elsewhere in the chart is the most common technical reason cited for delay.

This narrows the likely marriage window to a range — typically a Dasha period or a set of specific years — rather than a single date, which is the most astrology can responsibly offer before a Muhurat calculation for an already-finalised match.
The most commonly cited factors are a weak or afflicted 7th house or its lord, Saturn's influence on the 7th house or Venus/Jupiter, an unfavourable Dasha period running through the marriage-relevant years, and certain dosha placements like Manglik Dosha when uncancelled. Usually it is a combination of two or more of these rather than a single factor.
Not always, but Saturn's influence on marriage-related houses or planets does tend toward delay rather than denial in most classical interpretations. Saturn favours maturity and readiness over speed, so a Saturn-influenced marriage often arrives later but tends to be more stable once it does, especially compared to a marriage indicated purely by fast-moving planets.
Love marriage indications are typically read through the 5th house (romance) forming a connection to the 7th house (partnership) or its lord, often involving Venus or the Moon. Arranged marriage indications lean more on a straightforward, well-supported 7th house without strong 5th house involvement. Many charts show mixed indications, which is why a full reading looks at both houses together rather than assuming one pattern.
Astrology can narrow marriage timing to a Dasha period and supporting transit window, typically a range of months to a couple of years, rather than a single exact date. Once a couple is finalised, a separate Muhurat (auspicious timing) calculation is used to select the actual wedding date.
