The 10th House: Where Career Astrology Starts

In Vedic astrology, the 10th house (Karma Bhava) is the primary indicator of career, professional reputation, and public standing. A reading starts with three things: which sign occupies the 10th house, where the 10th house's ruling planet (lord) is placed elsewhere in the chart, and which planets aspect or occupy the 10th house itself. A strong, well-aspected 10th lord generally points to steadier career growth, while a weak or afflicted one can indicate more struggle or delay — though this is always read in context with the rest of the chart, not in isolation.

Two supporting houses matter almost as much: the 2nd house (accumulated wealth and income) and the 6th house (daily work, service, competition, and obstacles). Comparing the 10th house against the 6th and 11th (gains) is also how a reading distinguishes whether your chart leans more toward stable employment or independent/business ventures.

Timing: Why the Dasha Period Matters More Than the Birth Chart Alone

Your birth chart is fixed, but your experience of it changes over time through the Vimshottari Dasha system — a sequence of planetary periods (Mahadasha) and sub-periods (Antardasha) that activate different houses at different points in life. A person with strong career indications in their chart may still go through a quiet professional phase if they're currently running a Dasha period ruled by a planet with little connection to the 10th house — and the reverse is equally true.

This is why career astrology readings focus heavily on which period you're in right now and which is coming next, rather than only describing your general career "type." Transits of slower-moving planets — particularly Saturn (discipline, structure, delay) and Jupiter (growth, opportunity) — over the 10th house or its lord are also reviewed for shorter-term timing around a specific decision.
